Product Design Manager

London

Join our defence and national security business and you’ll be helping users plan and train to meet the most complex security threats in the world. Working alongside experts in AI and Machine Learning, computational modelling and distributed systems, you’ll be putting multiplayer technology to life-saving use.
Improbable Defence's product group exists to build products which enable governments to use synthetic environments to plan and train. The Product group manages a portfolio of valuable product-based offerings through the lifecycle.
As a Product Design Manager at Improbable, you will lead, develop and grow a team of highly skilled and fulfilled Product Designers and Lead Product Designers. You will represent your team and advocate Product Design excellence, to ensure that both internal stakeholders and external customers understand and appreciate its value. You will also be responsible for evolving our Product Design value proposition to mature our offering and how it is integrated into the wider business activity.
Due to the nature of this role, you will be expected to meet requirements associated with obtaining UK security vetting clearance; including an unbroken residency in the UK for the previous 5 years. If you think that this might be an issue for you, please let us know.

Areas for impact:

  • You will be responsible for recruiting a team of world-class product designers and work closely with your Head of Product Design and Research to help define a sustainable and scalable growth strategy.
  • You will lead a team of Product Designers and set a clear direction to ensure they can deliver their best work and are motivated and productive.
  • You will help plan and execute team training opportunities for the team to remain effective, innovative and stimulate vocational growth.
  • You will act as a subject matter expert (SME) to help advise the business on how projects will be optimally planned and how design, content and research will contribute.
  • You will develop trustful and collaborative relationships with colleagues and our customers and work closely with the Product team to bring areas of the business together.

We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following:

  • You have extensive experience ‘in the field’ as a Product designer or very similar design practitioner role (eg. UX or UI), and working in Agile teams shipping digital products.
  • You have manager experience overseeing at least 3 people.
  • You have experience and demonstrable expertise in leading the engagement and influencing of customers and stakeholders. Solid communication and organisation skills.
  • You are fluent in modern product design approaches and methodologies.
  • You have the ability to make an impact in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
While we think the above experience could be important, we’re keen to hear from people that believe they have valuable experience to bring to the role. If you identify with the team and mission, but not all of our requirements, then please still apply.
This role is hybrid so partly in-office and partly remote. We are located in London, with some travel required to customer and user locations. It is expected that you remain flexible to join in-office team activities wherever required.
